Midtown Shooting Suspect Faces Assault in the 1st Degree

ANCHORAGE-- An Anchorage man faces a judge for the first time Wednesday, after allegedly shooting  24-year-old Lorne Gayzagian on Eureka Drive near Fireweed last night.

27-year-old Phathasinh Sihabout faces assault in the 1st degree, misconduct involving weapons in the 3rd degree, tampering with physical evidence and misconduct involving weapons in the 4th degree. he was arraigned at the Anchorage Jail Court Wednesday afternoon.

Police say they found a white Chevy Trailblazer where Sihabout lives at 700 W. 53rd. A witness claimed to have seen the same type of vehicle leaving the crime area.

According to prosecutors Sihabout approached the victim, accused him of making "disparaging" remarks, punched him, pulled out a pistol and fired two or three times, hitting Gayzagian in the abdomen. Sihabout then fled the scene. Gayzagian was rushed to a local hospital for emergency surgery.

Court documents say Sihabout maintains his actions were in self defense and that Gayzagian tried to assault him.  Sihabout allegedly told authorities he drove to the area of Point Woronzof and threw the 9mm pistol into the inlet.

Bail is set at $60,000 and he is due back in court October 23rd.
