Alaska Tsunami Warning Center Issues Tsunami Warning For Coastal Alaska
The National Weather Service early Friday morning issued a Tsunami Warning effecting parts of Coastal Alaska, following a major magnitude 8.9 earthquake near Japan.
As of midnight Friday, NWS says the warning includes the coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass to Attu Island.
The tsunami advisory has been expanded to include the coastal areas of Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.
According to NWS, tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant widespread inundation is imminent or expected. Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible.
Advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to those near the water is expected, and currents my be hazardous to swimers and boats.
