Anchorage Waterways Council was out cleaning up the park for their third "Scoop the Poop" day this year.
They wanted to prevent the lake from being further contaminated by left behind animal waste.
Everyday in anchorage an estimated 70,000 dogs are producing a little under 1/2 pound of waste. All together that adds up to more than 10 tons a day.
AWC says a large amount of that is deposited in parks and other common areas, and is left to dissolve and run into local bodies of water...leaving behind bacteria like e.coli.
Along with the health risks, leaving behind your animals waste could get you fined $100 per violation.
AWC wants the community to scoop the poop and stop the pollution.
Besides cleaning up after you own animals, the Anchorage Park foundation says that you can take an extra step in protecting your community by maintaining and becoming a sponsor for Poop Station at your local trailhead.
