ANCHORAGE- A 26-year-old Palmer man has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay more than $78,000 restitution after illegally driving onto Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, and then crashing through closed gate to get out.

The U.S. attorney's office says Kyle Hansen was sentenced Monday for assaulting a federal officer.

Prosecutors say Hansen drove through the base's Boniface gate early Jan. 19, prompting a high-speed chase by security officers. The government says he tried to leave the base through another gate but when he found that exit blocked, he turned around and crashed through the closed Boniface gate, causing significant damage.

Hansen struck one Air Force law enforcement officer's rifle with the vehicle. The rifle then hit the officer in the throat, knocking him down an embankment.
