ANCHORAGE - On the heels of a promise for sweeping gun restrictions local shops are selling out of ammo and assault rifles.

"We've sold out of .223 amo. We basically sold out this morning," said Ken Feinman, manager, Wild West Gun. "What the publicity has done what the talk of gun control has done is basically brought our country into a frenzy."

Feinman says on top of regulars more first time customers are purchasing firearms.  The popular custom gun shop has been running as far as 2 hours behind on background checks from the FBI. "Usually I can have you in and out of here in about a minute and half, that's how quick the process is," Feinman said. "Right now, we have to call up to 30 times just to get connected to their hold system."

Every Alaskan buying a gun is required to fill out a form, provide identification and pass a federal background check.  Despite critics who say there aren't enough safety measures in place, there are plenty of gun-owning Alaskans and hunters who disagree. "I do bird hunting rabbit hunting moose hunting big game deer all kinds of stuff," said one hunter living in Anchorage. "I feel like there's going to be the same type of issues whether there's stricter gun control or not."

Another resident who doesn't own a gun, says the issue shouldn't just be focused on firearms.    "I think as much as you have access to a gun you should have access to mental health," he said.

The Connecticut shooting has prompted proposals for gun reform, but it's also made people question the nation's mental health care and the work that needs to be done to make getting care more accessible.

"People shouldn't panic," Feinman said. "What people should do get involved in the political process, get in touch with their legislator and make sure there are some real solutions here, not just feel good stuff."
