Transgendered Woman Banned From Local Restaurant for Using the Restroom
A transgender woman says she was a victim of discrimination after she was kicked out of a local bar and restaurant for going into the ladies room.
ANCHORAGE - A transgender woman says she was a victim of discrimination after she was kicked out of a local bar and restaurant for going into the ladies room.
MoHagani Megnetek told Your Alaska link she was banned from Humpy's because she went into the female bathroom, she says being transgendered she has never had anyone ask her to leave because of her gender.
"I've never been told I couldn't do anything or go anywhere," said Megnetek. "I mean we got a black president...gays in the military...women are fighting on the front lines."
According to Megnetek the bouncer told her the State issued I.D. Classified her as a male and for that reason she had to leave the bar even though there was currently no policy in place.
Megnetek was asked to leave after she had her picture taken and was told never to return.
"They could have said you got to leave for the evening but they banned me for life, you know they took my picture pretty much criminalized me," said Megnetek.
Leeanne Kemp, a customer who made the complaint online, says she ran to Megnetek's side because she witnessed the altercation.
"I didn't want it to become a situation where she was being ganged up on or not represented," said Kemp...I didn't want it to be her word against his."
Kemp took to Humpy's facebook page about the incident that she his calling discrimination.
Pete Burns, Humpy's general manager, released this statement:
"Currently we are working with ACLU and IDENTITY to ensure that future incidents never take place...We have expressed our sincerest apologies in both a public and private forum."
Megnetek and Kemp both met with officials at Humpy's, however Megnetek says their apology lacked full acknowledgment of the incident.
Burns told Your Alaska Link in a phone interview that "the decision to remove Megnetek was a poor choice on the part of the security staff."
He also said the incident is being addressed within the company and that they support the bouncer but admitted that education is needed for the entire company.
Megnetek says she will not return to the restaurant.
