FAIRBANKS - The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been pledged $1 million from a mining company for an engineering endowment.

Sumitomo Pogo Mine has pledged the gift over three years, from 2014 to 2016. It will provide research funding for as many as four graduate students a year to explore longterm projects. It's an extension of a previous $1 million pledge that was made in 2011.

That same year, Kinross Fort Knox pledged nearly $1 million over three years to the program.
