USGS moving online

by Jessica Gruenling

ANCHORAGE, Ak-- Just like the rest of the world the USGS map store is moving online.

"One of the main reasons we're doing this is office space is really expensive in anchorage, so USGS on campus here is trying to reduce their overall space by consolidating the space," Carl Markon, Action Regional Director, USGS.

And like most things these Alskan maps can be downloaded on your smartphone.

"We're actually doing it digital to help support that activity, so people can download the maps onto their phone," Markon.

A plus side to selling maps online is they're much more accurate.

Some maps sold insidle the store date back to the 1950's.

"Terrain can change a lot in that time. Online is the way to get the accurate most up to date map," Barbara Bell, Executive Director, Alaska Geographic.

There is still a demand for paper maps.

In January of this year Alaska Geographic, the non profit that currently operates the map store, opened a store at ship creek.

There they sell the most popular maps.

Bell says there's only one downside to becoming digital.

"If want a paper map you're going to have to plan ahead a little bit ," Bell.

For some of the stores customers there is some disappointment.

"There's always going to be a little pain associated with change and for people who are use to coming here before a trip they're going to have to think a little differently," Bell.

Even with these changes Alaska Geographic says they are striving to still connect Alaskans to the last frontier.
