Unions Show Big Presence at Labor Law Rewrite Introduction

ANCHORAGE--Hundreds of people from union groups flooded Anchorage Assembly Chambers Tuesday (2/12/13), for the introduction of Mayor Dan Sullivan's labor law rewrite.

The ordinance says Anchorage Municipal Code chapter 3.70, Employee Relations, was last updated as a whole in 1989 and some provisions are out of date.

Among other things, the rewrite would limit raises and eliminate the right to strike, according to reports. 

The city says goals of the proposed changes would include--creating an efficient, streamlined process and keeping costs in check.

However, many are extremely concerned over the rewrite, saying it is basically a sweeping change--an almost 180 degrees--to the accustom standard of more than 40-years.

"This was a surprise to everybody, even the department heads," said Sgt. Gerard Asselin with the Anchorage Police Department Employee Association.  "Friday night we get this information very late and all of the sudden here we are considering a new law, that's probably the most concerning issue to us."

The proposal is scheduled for a public hearing February 26th.  The assembly is set to hold a two-hour work session open to the public on the labor law rewrite Friday at 1pm.

of course they flooded the Assembly Chambers! They are trying to protect their grasp on power and control at the city's tax payers expense.
