Volunteers Care for Dropped Iditarod Dogs

by Jessica Gruenling

ANCHORAGE, Ak--  The most important aspectof of the Iditarod is keeping the Athletes healthy.

There are about 40 vets a long the trail making sure this happens.

Onces the dogs are taken out of the race, volunteers take over the responsibilities. The dogs are placed on planes and flown back to Anchorage.

Once back at head quarters these pups are carefully placed on a line, fed, given blankets, and given the best care possible.

Volunteers say caring for these dropped dogs is an extremely rewarding experience.
