Weather Conditions Remind Alaskans to Changeover Tires
ANCHORAGE - Tires can be a first line of defense when it comes to winter driving. Many Alaskans have already made the changeover well before the first snowfall, but some put it off.
Michael Helger, assistant manager at Johnson's Tire Service, says waiting "could lead to people getting into accidents."
The Department of Public Safety cautions drivers to slow down, citing speed as the primary cause of collision.
"You want to reduce your speeds to speeds that are safe for the conditions," said Capt. Randal Hahn.
Stopping when roads are slick can also lead to collision and Hegler says you may be ruining your tires.
"Tires spinning out at intersections are prematurely wearing down your tires, " he said.
According to Hegler, regular maintenance will give your winter tires a longer life.
