Weather Delays Planting In Valley
No Cause For Alarm Yet
Primarily a wholesale farm, the Vanderweele farm in Palmer is one of Southcentral Alaska's largest produce providers.
Their 200 plus acres providing everything from potatoes and lettuce to the what they say are some of the sweetest carrots growing in Alaska.
Selling to Carrs-Safeway, Fred Meyer and other stores and restaurants they can not afford to have a bad growing season.
Their first lettuce went in late this season and is not growing too quickly. A second planting delayed because of the cold so those pallets, each holding sixty four hundred plants are in a nearby barn.
Subsequent plantings of numerous crops are waiting in the green house for their turn to go into the ground .
With 40 years of farming under their belts these valley growing veterans aren't ready to sound the alarm yet.
If the weather improves enough by Monday they hope to get the next planting in the ground.
