Dry Creek Fire Spreads Closer to Tanana River

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) -- Winds and warm weather near Fairbanks have helped spread a fire almost to the Tanana River.

The Alaska Fire Service says the fire is burning on military lands about 18 miles south of North Pole. By Sunday afternoon, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (HTTP://IS.GD/XFDVLP ) reports it had grown to about 14,000 acres.

The blaze is not actively being fought because it is in a limited suppression area and does not threaten any buildings. But Alaska Fire Service spokesman Melvin Slater says smoke jumpers are now patrolling the area and will provide suppression if necessary.

The lightning-caused fire sent a huge plume of smoke over North Pole and Two Rivers during the weekend and sent smoke into Fairbanks.
