Windstorm Brings Residents to Wood Lot
Original Air Date: September 7, 2012
(ANCHORAGE, AK) - The Anchorage wood lot sees a spike in users after a major storm. This year is no different.
Anchorage resident Jimmy McDonald said most of the trees likely fell over due to the time of the season. He said last big windstorm saw higher speeds, but with less giving conditions.
"The ground is very soft right now. You've had a lot of rain, and it softens the ground, so it allows the roots to pull up. A lot of the trees actually pulled up the roots out of the ground because it's so soft," said McDonald.
"It's the best environmentally wonderful place to place your wood, because it's used. Other people can come here and get their firewood and chips, so it's not buried and wasted," said McDonald.
Anchorage resident Dan Berg lost four trees in the windstorm near his home. Berg brought the first of three loads, taking about two hours to chop up and load the fallen trees.
"At the city dump it's just gonna sit there and rot, so people won't use it, at least here people will be able to use it if they want it," said Berg.
The Anchorage Wood Lot offers free mulch and firewood and charges $10 per pickup load. The wood lot is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The lot is located near the South Snchorage Sports Park close to Klatt Road and C Street.
