JUNEAU- There's added activity at Auke Bay Elementary School in Juneau.
Workers are putting the finishing touches on a $17 million renovation project at the 50-year-old school.
Unanticipated problems with soil quality and elevator installation means work was finished by the time school started Tuesday. However, school officials say the project should be completed by Oct. 1.
Construction workers will only work after school and weekends so the school day isn't interrupted.
Among the renovations include a new roof for the gym, installing a ground source heat pump, new furniture, raised ceilings and a reconfigured parking lot.
