Anchorage business leaders hear the latest information for the Fire Island Wind Project during Monday's Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

CIRI is in a 25 year agreement with Chugach Electric to provide all the electricity generated by the wind turbines to the company and its clients in southcentral.

The 11 turbines are expected to generate 51,000 mega-watt hours every year for about 6,000 homes.

CIRI does hold permits to hold 22 more turbines on Fire Island and officials say the project won't have much impact on aviation traffic because of how far south it's located on the island.

The transmission line was the first piece of the project built, it costs more than $25 million of state appropriated funds. The rest of the project's price tag totals about $65 million.

"About a third of that is the logistics and the logistics of getting it here," said Ethan Schutt, Senior VP of Land and Energy Development, CIRI. "About a third of it is the civil construction and all the other on island activities and about a third of it is all the other stuff the engineering the permitting and the cost of money during construction the development fees and other expenses."

The first commercial power generated by Fire Island is expected in September.
