Zombies Take Over Downtown AnchorageOriginal Air Date: September 10, 2012 This past weekend, zombies took over part of downtown Anchorage and cameras were rolling to capture it all. They weren't real zombies of course, they were actors, but it was for an online commercial campaign to promote the need to be prepared for potential disasters. The municipality of Anchorage's office of emergency management along with the department of health and human services partnered together to put a new twist on news reports as the zombie apocalypse takes over the last frontier. The two departments wanted to focus on getting the community involved and invited anyone that wanted to be a zombie for a day to come out and get messy, "Most zombie preparedness stuff is kind of been training for first responders and we really wanted to take it and put it out into the community to use as a teaching tool and it's received fantastic response" said Dawn Brantley with the office of emergency management. Over 80 volunteers came out to be zombiefied and get their dead walk on.One zombie even took time to explain the complex difference between humans and zombies."Zombies have to look for food all of the time, so that's what we do..we look for food. We want food all the time. I like food I like humans," said zombie participant Denise Yancey. While food is important, it's not the only thing to keep in mind when preparing for a disaster. |
