JUNEAU- A state House committee heard strong comments for and against a bill allowing village public safety officers to carry firearms in the line of duty.

Public Safety Employees Association Executive Director Jake Metcalf tells the House committee his group had concerns that VPSOs will not have the proper training for making the decision on when to use deadly force. Several active Alaska State Troopers echoed his concerns to the committee.
However, Joe Masters, former commissioner for the Department of Public Safety, said it was time for the state to allow the arming of VPSO. He tells the committee that violence has been increasing in rural Alaska since 2002, and that's making the positions more dangerous.
Alaska has 93 VPSOs.
