Alaska Governor Rejects Medicaid Expansion
Gov. Sean Parnell is rejecting calls to expand Medicaid in Alaska, citing cost concerns.
JUNEAU- Gov. Sean Parnell is rejecting calls to expand Medicaid in Alaska, citing cost concerns.
The Republican governor has faced pressure from health, advocacy and business organizations urging him to expand Medicaid under the federal health care law. Some of the support has been more conditional. For example, the Alaska Chamber voted to support Medicaid expansion provided the federal match was maintained or an alternative pilot program was implemented.
A concern raised by Parnell in announcing initial opposition to expansion in February was whether the federal government would provide its promised level of funding for any expansion. He said Friday that remains a concern.
The government is expected to cover the cost of expansion the first three years and the bulk of the cost indefinitely, with states that chose expansion contributing.
