JUNEAU- U.S. Sen. Mark Begich says he didn't support a federal decision extending the comment period on a study of large mining impacts in the Bristol Bay region.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency extended until June 30 the comment period on its revised watershed assessment. The comment period originally was to end May 31.

Begich told a town hall Friday that EPA has plenty of material to work with, without the extended comment period. He said more time can mean more politics added to the process.

Begich said he wants science to determine what happens in the region. He said it may be apparent what direction the science is headed, but said the study needs to be completed.

EPA has said it plans to issue a final report this year.

Jon, I hope you have something in your net for a long time...and that your descendents have fish in their nets too.

To even take a chance of losing the largest wild fish area is not being fair to Alaskans and others who have fished there for decades. What happened to the vote a few years ago where it failed? Fisheries deserve better.

Happy Sunny Friday from Bristol Bay! So... to those elected representatives opposed to the development; What alternatives do you offer up to replace the failing socio-economic system we have in place? So. . . to those elected representatives in favor of development; What assurances can you insure in perpetuity to protect the surrounding environment and ecosystem from additional harm? That's what it ALL boils down to folks. . . Time to go check the net!
