Homer Voters to Vote on Repealing Bag Ban

HOMER- Homer voters will consider repealing its ban on the use of plastic shopping bags during the city election on Oct. 1.
Resident Justin Arnold gathered enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot. He's also up for a city council seat in the election.
The Homer City Council last year approved a ban on the onion skin-thin bags, even though thicker plastic bags were allowed. It went into effect Jan. 1.
Arnold says he's not advocating so much for the bags as he is for not having the government tell residents that they can't use them.
A co-sponsor of the original ban, council member Beau Burgess, maintains the plastic bags are a significant waste and trash problem and they particularly harm coastal environments.
