FAIRBANKS- Fairbanks-area residents are showing support for a new redistricting plan that would largely return districts to where they were before the 2012 elections.

The public got a chance to weigh in on 17 draft plans during a meeting Tuesday.

The Alaska Redistricting Board has been holding hearings on the draft plans, which include those proposed by third parties. The board is scheduled to meet next week to finalize a plan.

The plan largely supported by those who turned out Monday is a board-drawn map known as Plan D, with districts that largely match the boundaries of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The proposal avoids putting the borough's excess population into a rural district, like the plan used for last year's elections did.
