 ANCHORAGE, AK- Wednesday the Senate shot down a bill that aimed to eliminate the wage gap between men and women.

U.S. senator Lisa Murkowski says a bill is not going to close that gap.

"Perhaps this was more an exercise in political messaging than an effort to try and resolve what I believe is an issue"

Determining how wide the wage gap is between genders can be compiled multiple ways.

The census bureau collects information through survey and the department of labor gets data through employers’ payroll both ways yielding different results.

But one thing can be certain.

"Women are paid less in almost all occupations, industries and geographies.”

And just how much?

"Looking at the wage gap between men and women in Alaska, if you look at it over the past ten years, right now the most recent data we have shows women earn about 67 cents on the dollar and that has changed very little"

There are a variety of factors that come into play when trying to analyze the difference between men and women's salaries. 

In a survey done by Pew Research, women take more time off from work and turn down job promotions because they have to care for children or family members.

"I think that generally women do, because they have the dual roles in the home more so than the men," said Colleen Smith, Anchorage.

"There all kinds of factors that can potentially effect the pay, now our data doesn't really tell us what those factors are its very hard to tease out why that is,"

Whatever factors come in to play when figuring out why men are paid more in the workplace, Senator Murkowski wants to get to the bottom of it.

"Let’s figure out where why and how then lets honestly try and address that rather than through messaging efforts which are designed to elevate the issue which is fair, but not pragmatic in addressing a solution," said Senator Lisa Murkowski.
