A man was left with minor injuries after, troopers say, he was attacked by a bear in Hope Saturday night.

Seward Troopers responded to a report of a bear encounter at around 11:40 p.m. Investigation showed 45-year-old Joshua Brekken of Hope was walking on Palmer Creek Road when he came across a brown bear and cub. The bear was roughly 30 yards away when it charged at Brekken. He then attempted to climb a tree when the bear swatted him out, injuring him.

Troopers say the bear took off running into the woods with its cub and did not return to the area.

Brekken transported himself to the hospital.
