EU Sanctions May Mean More Air Traffic for Anchorage
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, threatened Tuesday to retaliate for the grounding of a subsidiary of national airline Aeroflot because of EU sanctions, with one newspaper reporting that European flights to Asia over Siberia could be banned.
This means that flights bound for Asia that would normally cross over Siberia would have to be rerouted through Anchorage for more fuel. There is no timetable as to when this could happen.
Currently there is only one flight to Russia from Anchorage on Yakutia Airways and flies only on the weekend.
