Founded in the 1970's the Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation makes it their mission to promote safety and pilot education through out Alaska .
With hundreds of members around the state the Alaska Aviation Safety Foundation reaches out to the general aviation population with safety seminars and scholarships to encourage Alaskans with a desire to get involved with aviation. Erin Hall Meade with the AASF "We love giving this money away we are a non profit organization, we are required by law to give away a certain amount of money so we want to give it away".With a little time and a computer any young person looking at aviation as a career can find some financial help from a number of Alaskan aviation groups. Hall took a look "In a hour and a half I found $10,000 dollars worth of scholarships, none of them exclude you after the first year"
Hall emphasized that for young Alaskans that would like to remain in rural Alaska, aviation can be a great career choice. "If you're a kid that was born in the bush and loves living in the bush what better career then aviation. You can go home every night and your community and your providing a valuable service"
And according to Hall it is not only scholarships for pilots that are offered. Airframe and power plant mechanics are always in demand."This is a career where you've got benefits, long term employment you can go anywhere you want and you can get a job"
Perhaps working in a tower or flight service station is more to your liking."If you want to go into aviation management theirs a scholarship for that too"said Hall.
Hall points out that there are at least a dozen scholarships and thousands of dollars waiting for qualified and motivated Alaskans every year."If you meet the requirements, apply, we want good candidates, we want to give away the money!"
