Katie John Day

Anchorage, AK -- Today, Governor Dunleavy signed a bill establishing May 31st as Katie John Day.

John was an Ahtan Athabaskan Indian who devoted her life to protecting the traditions of her community, and was a strong advocate for native rights.

She worked closely with the Native American Rights Fund to secure subsistence fishing rights for the Batzulnetas village.

John, who died in 2013 at the age of 97, is described as an Alaskan icon who protected her ancestral homeland.
