FAIRBANKS- The team managing the response in flood-ravaged Galena says about 50 residents will be flown back Tuesday.

The 50 are needed to assist in cleanup work in the Yukon River community 270 miles west of Fairbanks.

An ice jam on the Yukon backed river water into Galena on May 27.

No one was injured but an estimated 180 homes were damaged in the community of nearly 500 people.

Most took refuge in Fairbanks but others flew to Anchorage or Ruby.

The Tanana Chiefs Conference is coordinating the return effort in cooperation with Louden Tribal Council and the city of Galena.

The conference says it continues to recommend that elders and children stay away until safety concerns are addressed.
