FAIRBANKS - The Fairbanks North Star Borough is considering allowing borough workers carry firearms while on the job.

Borough Assemblyman Lance Roberts has introduced an ordinance that would bar the borough from restricting employees from carrying firearms.

Roberts says his aim is to make the borough workplace safer. He says gun-free zones are the most unsafe places in the country, pointing to recent shootings in schools and a movie theater.

The borough doesn't post signs barring the public from carrying firearms, and during the 2011 election it was noted that Assemblyman Michael Dukes frequently carries a firearm to meetings.

The assembly will hold a work session on the issue on Thursday.
