FAIRBANKS, Alaska- A global mining company has named Tom Irwin of Fairbanks as its new president and chief executive officer.
Irwin assumes the job for International Tower Hill Mines on Jan. 1. He has spent the past two years as a company vice president, overseeing its Livengood gold project 70 miles north of Fairbanks.
Irwin's promotion comes amid significant changes at the British Columbia-based firm. The company is cutting about 30 percent of its staff, and its board of directors is being sliced from seven members to three.
Irwin says the moves are designed to conserve cash, advance discussions with other companies and continue environmental studies required for permitting.
