Change of Plea Set in Police Officer Shooting
The man charged with shooting a Buckland police officer has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
ANCHORAGE- The man charged with shooting a Buckland police officer has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
A court notice Thursday says 40-year-old Gary Ballot will plead guilty Monday in Nome to attempted murder, assault and felony importation of alcohol in the July 26 shooting of Lorin Geary.
Alaska State Troopers say Ballot made plans to take alcohol by riverboat to wedding party outside Buckland but instead attempted to unload the liquor in the dry village.
Geary and other unarmed officers confronted Ballot as the boat was being unloaded.
Prosecutors say Ballot pulled out a rifle, and as Geary attempted to take it away, shot the officer.
Geary suffered serious arm and leg injuries.
An attempted murder sentence can range from five to 99 years.
