SMYRNA, DE- Firefighters from Delaware and Maryland are helping to battle a wildfire in Alaska.
Henry Poole of the Delaware Forest Service says members of the team have different specialties that make them valuable to answer calls like this one. The 20-member team was called to assist because firefighters in other nearby states are too busy putting out wildfires in other parts of the country.
Officials say that as of Tuesday the Stuart Creek 2 Fire had burned 128 square miles since it started in late June.
The Delaware team left Smyrna on Friday and will join more than 600 personnel helping to put out the fire. They will work with a Maryland team to protect structures on the northern edge of the fire.
