A Fairbanks police officer is again walking the downtown beat.

Reports say an officer has been assigned to foot and bicycle patrol after Mayor John Eberhart took complaints that people were not feeling safe downtown.

Officer Nathan Werner has been on the job since May 1. He's spending time in and around Golden Heart Plaza on the Chena River, a downtown park popular with both tourists and chronic inebriates.

He's made arrests for fighting, indecent exposure and urinating in public.

He says most arrests are related to alcohol.
