FAIRBANKS - A move is under way to stop the automatic distribution of residential phone books in Alaska, and an administrative law judge supports the idea.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Administrative Law Judge John P. Wood generally agrees with the argument that the directories have become less necessary in the digital age.

The distribution of white pages is required by state law.

Alaska Communications had asked the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to allow it to halt mass distribution of the white pages. The company argues that in an age when such listings are available online, sending copies of the white pages to customers is both a hassle and an unnecessary environmental expense.

The fees to use directory assistance are getting increasingly higher. I just see this as a way to charge the customer more. Not everyone can get the internet. I all ways keep my white and yellow pages by my phone. I don't always have the time to boot up the internet.
