Mild winter means easier time clearing Denali road
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Road crews clearing the road into Denali National Park say the going has been easy so far.
Reports say a mild winter that included a January thaw is making it easier to remove snow from the 92-mile road.
The National Park Service this winter plowed the first 12.5 miles of the road to offer opportunities to winter visitors. Clearing crews by Thursday made it to Mile 30.
East district road supervisor Riley Tingue says there's a good chance the road will be opened to the Teklanika Rest Area at Mile 30 earlier than previous years.
Park officials typically open the road to Teklanika in mid-April. Tour buses begin using the road May 20 and the road is closed to cars at Mile 15.
