Officials Seek Long-Term Homes for Galena Evacuees
Galena residents who left for Fairbanks after a spring flood will not be booted out of a former hotel Sept. 30.
FAIRBANKS- Galena residents who left for Fairbanks after a spring flood will not be booted out of a former hotel Sept. 30.
The Tanana Chiefs Conference since May have offered shelter to evacuees at Willow House, a former Best Western Hotel. The tribal consortium bought the hotel in 2011 and set up Willow House as a temporary home for village residents seeking medical care in Fairbanks.
A Sept. 30 deadline for finding alternative housing was mentioned at a meeting last month.
Tanana Chiefs says in an announcement that evacuees won't be asked to leave if they've not found other housing.
Spokeswoman Doreen Deeton says Willow House is not well-suited for families with children. She says rooms lack kitchens and other basic facilities.
The consortium is seeking long-term housing for evacuees.
