Park Service Closes Airstrip Damaged by Breakup
A small airstrip in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve has been closed because of damage from breakup.
FAIRBANKS- A small airstrip in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve has been closed because of damage from breakup.
The National Park Service closed the Gelvin's Airstrip after it was damaged by spring flooding.
The service said it doesn't currently have the resources to fix it because of federal budget cuts.
The Charley River often cuts into the airstrip during breakup, but this year's spring flooding left many obstacles and ice-gouged gullies. Pilots who frequently use the airstrip have been notified of the closure, and a large, white X has been painted on it to alert pilots it's not safe to land.
The airstrip is 75 miles up the Charley River from where it flows into the Yukon River.
