Anchorage's Cheney Lake is in line for a facelift, to better protect migratory birds.

The Municipality of Anchorage received $10,000 from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the Cheney Lake bank restoration project.

Nearly 200 feet of shoreline will see added topsoil, and the planting of hundreds of trees and shrubs, including alders. The existing trees and shrubs will remain, and the soil will stay at the same level.

The goal is to give birds more cover from the elements.

Officials will guide the project, and teens from the Youth Employment in the Parks program will work the project.

"The kids are getting the work experience, and the pay, and the habitat is being improved. So it's a win-win situation," said U.S. Fish & Wildlife Spokesperson Bruce Woods.

The grant comes as part of Fish and Wildlife's Urban Conservation Treaty for Migratory Birds.

Anchorage is home to nearly 150 species of migrating and nesting birds.
