The victim of the Sunday (1-29)  morning stabbing Thomas Atkinson Jr., 56, has died while in the hospital. Richard Smith is in custody after turning himself in Sunday night. He was arrainged yesterday for assault. Police say they're awaiting autopsy results from the state Medical Examiner's office to determine the cause and manner of death.

Atkinson Jr., was stabbed several times in the back early Sunday morning by an acquaintance Richard Smith, 21.  Police say they while they were drinking in Atkinson's apartment on the 700 block of North Flower Street and say they're still not sure what provoked Smith to stab Atkinson.

Witness say that Atkinson at first though he was having a heart attack.

"Often people who are stabbed think they have been struck," said APD Spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker. "It feels like someone has struck you with a fist or something like that. It's only later when you discover the blood and resulting in internal injuries that you might realize you were stabbed."

Officials said that sometimes stabbing victims don't realize that they have actually been stabbed until later.
