BETHEL- Tribal leaders from Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta villages gathered in Bethel for a summit to discuss energy needs in that region.

The summit Monday precedes the annual convention of the Association of Village Council Presidents that begins Tuesday.

Leaders from dozens of villages attended the summit put on by the nonprofit AVCP.

Elders at the summit say the coming winter could be a cold one. According to Toksook Bay elder Paul John, Yup'ik culture teaches people how to survive in a harsh environment.

Also in attendance was John McIntyre, who works with an AVCP program that assists needy families.

McIntyre urged those in attendance to share information about people in their villages who may need assistance.
