JUNEAU- Gov. Sean Parnell has ordered that state flags be lowered to half-staff Wednesday for Peace Officers Memorial Day and Law Enforcement Memorial Week.

President Barack Obama has declared Wednesday to be Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Parnell, meanwhile, has issued a state proclamation declaring May 10-17 this year as Law Enforcement Memorial Week in Alaska.

Parnell, in a news release, says the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices that law enforcement officers and their families face "earn them the respect, admiration and gratitude of the people they serve and protect."
