PILOT STATION - Troopers say a 9-year-old fatally shoots another boy. The incident happened in the village of Pilot Station located on the northern bank of the lower Yukon River.

Troopers say the boy was shot and killed Friday 9/28) during an argument with another 9-year-old boy. The shot came from what troopers described as "a high-powered .17 caliber pellet rifle." The other boy fired the air rifle while the two were having an argument, and the round hit the child in the chest.

No one is in custody. Troopers are consulting with juvenile authorities. They haven't released either child's name and won't release the name of the shooter because he is a young juvenile.

Ooops!!! I just re-read my last post. The next to last sentence should read: I don't believe weapons safety (and a lot of other stuff) should be tossed onto the shoulders of the educators. They have enough on their plate already.

You're right, Toni, except I believe it should rest SOLELY on the parents or other responsible family members. I was taught weapons safety by my grandfather when I was a wee one. I happened to walk in front of my sister while she was aiming and close to pulling the trigger. My grandfather tied me to the clothesline pole!!! I never forgot THAT! I also remember all the other safety "tricks of the trade" he taught us kids. Thanks to his training, I qualified as expert on the firing range the entire 22 years I was in the military. I don't believe weapons safety (and a lot of other stuff) should NOT be tossed onto the shoulders of the educators. They have enough on their plate already.

what a shame, so sad that the parents of this child that did the shooting are not being part of the trial. the parents in the school system are held liable if their child misses school or does a crime. why not these parents. what a tragedy. in Alaska all children need to learn to respect guns, be taught how to use a gun and i feel they should go to a gun safety class paid fee by their parents, it should be part of own a gun by everyone in the state of Alaska. It would be a neat idea for the school system to teach Alaskan children gun safety. Hey if the parents won't do their job and be responsible let the school system step in, I put my tax money to the vote.
