ANCHORAGE- Elizabeth Williams is a Freshman at UAA, and is happy to be a part of a club that promotes a positive well-being.JESSICA WILLIAMS IS A FRESHMAN AT UAA.

"I am trying to de-stigmatize mental health and make it a more welcoming place for students to talk about."

Williams feels the Active Minds club is making a positive impact.

"I met a lot of really great people through this club. We've done some really cool events, and I also feel like I'm making a positive difference."

The club is making a difference by spreading awareness that mental health is a common issue in college students.

"One in four adults with the mental disorder. Our mission statement really is trying to raise awareness of how unfortunate how common mental illness really is actually among college students like depression and anxiety."

One thing the club is doing is saying it is OK to have depression and anxiety as a mental disorder.

"We just basically dedicate it to raising mental health awareness and decreasing the stigma that is created with the diagnosis."

These young activists are increasing knowledge during a stressful month for college students.

"We are hosting Stress-less week at the end of April, around finals week. We will have pizza and booth to try to get people to relax and feel laid back."

The club encourages people to talk and reach out to others. Starting the conversation is the toughest part, but the pay off is so much worth it.
