JUNEAU- The Iliamna Village Council wants to rescind a report that backed up conclusions about the potentially negative impacts of large-scale mining in the Bristol Bay region.
Donald Macalady analyzed for the council a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on mining in the region. His analysis suggests some of the impacts may have been understated by EPA in its revised watershed assessment.
Days after it was submitted, council president Lorene Anelon submitted a resolution rescinding the review and directing it not be made part of the official record.
The resolution says Anelon hired Macalady without the council's full authority to submit testimony for the EPA comment period.
A letter accompanying the resolution from Anelon said the council doesn't support keeping lands in the watershed area off limits to development.
