ANCHORAGE - A 33-year-old Hooper Bay man is charged with first degree murder in the beating death of a woman in the western Alaska village.

Alaska State Troopers say David Hoelscher was arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of 27-year-old Pauline Mann. An affidavit by a trooper says the two were in a relationship.

According to the affidavit, the couple's 9-year-old daughter says Hoelscher became angry at Mann and began pulling the woman's hair and punched and kicked her late Sunday. The girl said her mother was not breathing Monday morning.

The affidavit says Hoelscher walked into the village police office that afternoon and said he thought he killed Mann when he was drunk.

Mann's body was being sent to Anchorage for an autopsy by the state medical examiner's office.
