ANCHORAGE- A 49-year-old Togiak man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison in connection with the illegal killing of a protected walrus on Round Island.

Federal prosecutors say Sixty Arkanayak was sentenced Thursday to 30 months and three years of supervised release.

Arkanayak pleaded guilty in February to illegally taking a walrus and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The case of co-defendant Jessie Anariak remains pending.

Prosecutors say the men fired on a group of walrus in May 2011, wounding five, at the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary. Prosecutors say four of the animals escaped into the sea and the fifth was shot until it died.

Prosecutors say the men removed the tusks and left the rest of the dead walrus on the beach.
