Work Begins to Update Chugach National Forest Regulations

Nearly half of Alaska's population is bordered by the Chugach National Forest and work has begun to revise the current regulations governing activities within those 5.4 million acres.

 ANCHORAGE - Nearly half of Alaska's population is bordered by the Chugach National Forest and work has begun to revise the current regulations governing activities within those 5.4 million acres.

     
The 'forest plan' provides direction for the management of resources and activities within the Chugach National Forest, such as  fish and wildlife habitats, historic and sacred sites as well as mineral exploration and development.
     
In the first of several public hearings, Thursday (2/7), forest supervisors met with the public to discuss the forest plan revision.
     
The revision will identify emerging issues and evaluate how the public uses the forest now as well as how its uses may change in the future.
     
"These meetings are actually sharing what the allocation was that they helped generate ten years ago," said Terry Marceron, forest supervisor."We're re-looking at that and determining where we need to change, and in addition we're sharing the accomplishments that they helped us through various projects like the Whistle Stop and the Chugach Children's Forrest. We are sharing the successes that we have achieved over the last ten years and asking what should we be looking forward to in the future."
