AFD Responds to Large Apartment Fire in Midtown

The Anchorage Fire Department extinguished a large housing complex fire at 34th street and Eureka in midtown Anchorage Thursday.

ANCHORAGE - The Anchorage Fire Department extinguished a large housing complex fire at 34th street and Eureka in midtown Anchorage Thursday.

Residents of the apartment building and nearby were evacuated. More than 2 dozen residents were displaced and the Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Spenard Recreation Center for those who need it.

AFD says 2 people were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Residents say the fire broke out around 8:45 a.m. Thursday morning and reports of an explosion was heard shortly after.

AFD says when crews arrived on-scene fire was coming from the 3rd floor and the roof of the apartment building. There were 2 vehicles nearby that also caught fire.
