Anchorage Assembly Debates Rural Street Lights
The Anchorage Assembly will debate how much light should shine down from street lights in rural parts of the city.
ANCHORAGE- The Anchorage Assembly will debate how much light should shine down from street lights in rural parts of the city.
Assemblywoman Jennifer Johnston has introduced a measure that would lower requirements for bright street lights in rural areas.
Johnston says residents of subdivisions in hillside areas want to preserve dark skies.
The change is drawing objections from the city public works department.
The city officials say Johnston's ordinance would limit their power to require adequate lighting near schools and intersections.
Public Works director Ron Thompson reports the measure also could make road design more expensive. He says some roads would have to be redesigned to remove curves or make other changes to account for lower lighting levels.
The assembly will discuss the measure Tuesday.
