ANCHORAGE- Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage police say enhanced patrols over the Fourth of July holiday weekend have led to nearly 50 arrests on charges of driving under the influence.

Troopers made 20 DUI arrests during the five-day enforcement period that began last Wednesday, including two felony arrests and 18 misdemeanors.

More than two-thirds of 632 citations issued by troopers were for speeding, with another 19 based on seat-belt or restraint violations.

Troopers say they responded to 19 damage crashes. Those included a crash that killed Lakewood, Wash., motorcyclist Roy Ovist Friday on the Taylor Highway.

Anchorage police say officers arrested 27 people on DUI charges during the holiday period, which ended Sunday.
